Tour operators, hotels and airlines are bracing for a rocky 2009 as the global financial crisis hits long haul travel. Tourism was doing well in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Macao until the news media began carrying stories of political and other problems. There was a major protest in Thailand that shut down Bangkok's airport for a week. As a result, more than a million tourists cancelled their bookings. In India, the terrorist attack in Mumbai was directed at the top hotels and the tourists, and the result has been a general drop in travel to all Indian destinations, even those pure tourism areas like Goa - bookings down 25%. Sri Lanka has become a war zone in the public's imagination and Macao's visitor numbers have been affected by a cutback in the number of visas issued by China. These pictures taken from sunda kelapa old harbour. This harbour was built in the 16 th century. Long, long time ago... this is where the Portuguese traded with the Hindu Kingdom of Pajajaran. Since than this port has belonged to the Portuguese and Dutch.

Dutch domination of Jakarta and the rest of Indonesia began from this area, an old fort and trading post of the Dutch East Indies Company can still be seen now.

Nowadays, Sunda Kelapa is a fisherman's wharf and an inter-island port.

Tugu Tani, sebuah monumen yang menyimbolkan sumbangsih rakyat pada masa perjuangan merebut kemerdekaan Indonesia. Kedua sosok pada monumen ini adalah sepasang petani. Sang Suami turut dalam baku tempur demi memperjuangkan kemerdekaan negeri. Sang istri, turut membantu dengan mengantarkan makanan untuk sang suami.

Monumen ini, yang konon merupakan tanda mata dari pemerintah Uni Soviet (sekarang Rusia) adalah sebuah pelambang nan ironi bagi kondisi petani Indonesia saat ini. Kemerdekaan yang turut mereka rebutkan justru menggerus kemerdekaan mereka.

Sebab, bagi penikmat kemerdekaan hari ini (pemerintah dan pemilik modal), negara kita lebih butuh investasi ketimbang petani. Duh, biyung!

Ini bukan foto kelenteng, dan potretnya juga bukan diambil dari negeri panda itu. Bangunan ini adalah sebuah mesjid. Ya, Mesjid Jami Tan Hok Liang.

Tan Hok Liang adalah nama asli Anton Medan, mantan bandit terkenal yang bolak-balik masuk penjara sejak berusia 14 tahun karena menggergaji leher preman terminal Tebing Tinggi yang berusaha memerasnya. Delapan belas tahun sudah ia habiskan "bertamasya di hotel prodeo" itu, sampai kemudian titik balik mengantarkannya pada pertobatan.

Setelah masuk Islam, ia pun berganti nama menjadi H. Ramdhan Effendi, dan menjadi pendakwah yang cukup populer. Meski sudah berkali berganti nama ia tetap ingat akarnya. Namanya ia abadikan sebagai nama mesjid yang berada di lingkngan Pondok Pesantren yang ia asuh. Pondok Pesantren At-Taibin (Orang yang kembali/bertobat).

Karena akarnya pula, ia sengaja merancang mesjid ini dengan arsitektur Cina. Terinspirasi dari istana kerajaan Cina, Dinasti Ching, maka berdirilah mesjid yang berlokasi di Kelurahan Pondok Rajeg, Cibinong, Jawa Barat ini.

Jakarta bertumbuh seperti sebuah permainan susun balok elektronik, Tetris, tingkat mahir yang dimainkan oleh orang yang tak sigap. Tumbuh tanpa terencana. Tumpang tindih, saling silang, yang penting tinggi.

Pada malam ketika bangunan-bangunan tinggi jadi, kemana para tukang batu pergi. [Bait terakhir ini adalah gubahan dari puisi Bertold Brech.

Foto-foto berikut adalah hasil berayau motret di satu proyek pembangunan milik Departemen Keuangan Republik Indonesia, di wilayah Menteng, Jakarta. Tak jauh dari Monas, dekat sekali dari Gambir, dan parak dari Tugu Tani.
